See how you can Pledge to HackerspaceSG

I can contribute:

  • Ruiwen - time/effort/ideas/me
  • icedwater - drinks (not too much alcohol, it's not as cheap as .de)

  • hongster - time, lots of code, some books
  • triplez - everything
  • Luther - me myself and I
  • Technie - books, code, hardware

I can donate...:

  • hongster - 1 set (2.1) speakers, keyboard, some old books
  • kenny - parts from my growing mountain of junk (resistors, switches, breadboards, jumpers...etc)

What would be awesomely cool in a Hackerspace is...:

  • "Community-decorated" walls! / Whiteboard paint on walls
  • Free caffeine!
  • Bean bags for napping (+1)
  • Fridge filled with drink
  • Bookshelf for geeky books
  • Weekly/Daily events held like user groups, lightning talks, barcamp style talks, etc.
  • Online website / wiki / forum / code repository (git?) / timetable of events (using wiki?) / members / who's hacking on what / ideas repository

What would an Ideal Venue look like?

  • WiFi
  • Desks, Chairs, Sofas
  • Bathing facilities (+1)
  • Food nearby 24 hrs
  • 24/7 Accessible
    • Do we really need 24/7 or just evenings and weekends?
  • Near to MRT (5-10 mins walk away)
  • Large enough for 20?
  • Fridge / Stove / Sink / Kitchen
  • Printer
  • Power Supply / Power bars / Lots of POWER
  • Airconditioning
  • Projector / Screen / Microphones
  • Security System
  • (If possible) Hacky toys, eg. Arduino boards, Bug Labs Bugs, etc?

Suggested Locations

  • Boat Quay shop houses (Clarke Quay MRT)
  • Shop houses near Outram Park MRT (neil road) (+1)
  • Haji lane shop houses (quite central)
  • Dalhousie lane shophouses (next to little india and simlim square) - 2nd storey only. not bad for 900sq ft.
  • Places in IHLs?
    • NUS?
    • SMU?
    • NTU?
  • Tanjong Katong? Hackers need to retract a little bit from the mainstream areas :)
  • Shop houses near Kallang & Paya Lebar MRT
  • Areas around Middle road
  • Shop houses across SimLim Tower (little india area)
  • *Scape new the Somerset/Orchard area (It's run by an NPO to cater to youth interests, see Straits Times 21 Sept Home section for details. Have mailed them for more info - contacts with *Scape Co Ltd will be appreciated)

Rules

  • Clean up after yourself.
  • Make it and treat it like your own home.
  • THAT'S IT! HACKERS DON'T NEED RULES!

Concerns...

  • Operation & Maintenance Cost
    • We are doing our cost analysis right now (the wiki will be updated as we find out more about the costs)
  • Keeping the flame burning
    • We plan to go around talking at events and schools about hackerspace to get the awareness. We also need the help from you guys to spread the word about it.
  • Possible Self Sustainable?
    • We are looking into various possibilities of self sustainability. This is our top priority to figure out how to keep this hackerspace sustainable by itself. Suggestions are welcomed.
  • Near Halal food places for Muslim hackers (NOT AN ISSUE: most places in sg DO offer at lease 1~2 muslim food stalls/outlet/choice)
    • Most of the small coffee shops near shop houses should be Halal. We will keep this in mind when looking for locations.

How about we set up a cafe and offer really cheap coffee to the hackerspace? 0.50 for an espresso or something. But they'd have to buy a $5 card which allows them to have 10 drinks :)

@icewater This might be an ideal idea, but time/effort need to split into hacking and running business. Unless you can write a cron job to run the business for you....

On drink:
It is preferable to have a (mini) fridge to stock up drinks. Have a coin box besides the fridge so that we can make a little "contribution" whenever we grab a drink.

I think 24hr would be nice. When you are HIGH on programming, you just can't stop, even if it is 3am in the morning. If there is not time restriction, we can host Hackathon once in a while.

#Security System
If (many of us | everyone) need easy access, access card will be convenient. If can use ezlink even better, dont need to worry about getting cards for new member. If just use key, only a few members will be holding the keys.

#hacktoys
I guess after hackerspace is formed, we can buy toys together and share shipping.

24hrs is nice. But how many people will use it during the day time? And how many people will use it after 12am on a weekday? I can understand on Friday night all the way to Sunday being 24 hours. But it does not make sense to have a space on weekdays during the day time. Or will there be people interested for weekdays during the day time?

#Security System
I'll call the guys tomorrow who are involved in the security system using ezlink and get a rough gauge on the cost of such a system

Probably startups without their own offices would be interested in weekdays day time. You could consider renting it out just like office space, except cheaper(or barter for their services)

Renting out as office during weekdays 6am-6pm is a good idea. I think there's quite of few of us interested in renting a workspace, myself inclusive.

I wonder if the RFID sniffer would be able to clone cards that pass by a guy standing next to the door with a laptop and a RFID receiver.

So RFID is no go, unless you provide members with loads of aluminium foils for DIY protection from readers.

If someone is able to do that, we welcome him/her to the hackerspace for free. Or if anyone can hack the ezlink card access security system or pick a lock (if we're getting either of them), we'll gladly welcome him/her in with open arms. This is hackerspace. We embrace and welcome these.

@justin
I agree on the #accessible part. I think most of us will not go to a hackerspace during weekday office hour. Usually we will gather during weekends and some weekday nights.
Is it possible to rent a place for weekends only? I think it will be good if we can find such deal.

#Startup @WongLiangZan Do we want to allow startups to use hackerspace as a office? At this moment, I am not against it but would like to bring it up for discussion. We may need to define the usage of hackerspace.

@MuhammadNuzaihan I know how write code for smartcard reader to access information on Malaysian IC. Next time can share it with everyone :)

@Leong cool. i can share mine. ;)

So who is this troll editted and removed the articles? Luther Goh ([email protected]). There is no flaming but we're giving constructive suggestions and don't be a flamebait.

Looks like someone's ego is tripping which is kind childish for an NUS student. Go and play with your android app which looks awkwardly similar to microsoft vine or you can stay and be constructive.

Someone please edit or remove Justin's post in regard to "hack the ezlink card access security system or pick a lock"..........

This is SG here, suggestion of welcoming or involvement of illegal activities as such if reported, is not gonna help in anyway to the establishment of HSSG.

@Muhammad Nuzaihan: I have looked through the revision history of this wiki page and based on the changes I made, I did not seem to have "deleted any articles". I think I will be grateful if you can clarify, as I did not have any malicious intentions.

*Keeping the flame buring*
Possible Self Sustainable?
Near Halal food places for Muslim hackers

Nevertheless, however non-malicious intentions they are, but once it may acted upon to dismiss it as a "flame" is not appropriate, and trolling around doesn't help either with an unintelligible edits that portrays a childish act - even though it may look as a joke - "Me, Myself and I", though you (and me) may wish to keep it informal but if you're serious about something then stop making stupid entries.

@Murphy It depends on how you may wish to use it with intent. It the intent is wrong then it will be wrong. pick locking might be alright, since i myself had on some occasions forgot my key and went out and was locked out. It comes pretty much handy. Ezlink cards are not being explored much, but it is nice to start off a research on it's vulnerabilities, though even if we discover the problems and understand how to exploit it, we can never use it as "exploiting is tampering" which is against the terms & conditions of Ezlink usage. However, if we were to publish such work in the public domain, i am never sure if it will become legal but if it is illegal, it is unfair that's what most businesses do which is - security by obscurity.
